Creating An Art Journal Page::Spring Fling Project

When I first felt the desire to create art journal pages I was really stumped as far as just how to do it.  My first attempts had so much color on them they seemed too dark to me.  After taking some classes and watching a lot of YouTube videos I feel like I've made a lot of progress.  At least I am happier with my results.  Today I'm going to show you my process, everyone has a different process, but this is how I do what I do.  My products for this page have been very generously supplied by Tsukineko/Imagine Crafts.  This is my third project for them this month as an "AIRs" (Artists in Residence) team member.  It is my themed project for the month of March called "Spring Fling".  This is a VERY long post so please grab a cup of coffee or tea and put your feet up.

I started with a 9" by 12" piece of watercolor paper 140# and coated it with a light frosting of gesso, allowing it to dry before proceeding.  I recently purchased some Yellow Ochre Pan Pastels and couldn't wait to use them so I applied some on the paper with a dauber applicator from Imagine Crafts.  After rubbing this into the paper I sprayed it with water and some Dandelion Fireworks! spray and Tangelo Fireworks! spray.  These sprays have a concentrated color with a little shimmer to them.  I sprayed some additional water on these colors and let them move around on the paper by lifting the paper and turning it.  After blotting the excess ink and water off I used a heat gun to dry the paper.

Next I put a small amount of Liquitex Titanium White Acrylic on the page and spread it all over with an old credit card.  Using a baby wipe I lifted off some of the white paint until I was happy with the color.  Memento makes some lovely colors of ink and for this project I used Peanut Brittle and Morocco on a stamp called "Geometric Swirl" by Rubber Stampede.  I just randomly stamped the image and the colors on my page.
I used TCW's lacy stencil and a chevron stencil to spray Tsukineko Walnut ink and Willow Walnut ink onto the paper.  After spraying these and blotting the page I dried it thoroughly with a heat gun.  I added Cottage Ivy Fireworks! spray onto the page and used a paper towel roll to towel it off.  Since I wanted more of the green I used Memento's Cottage Ivy ink pad and applied a touch more with my dauber applicator.  I blended it in with a baby wipe until the color was just what I wanted.  In a few areas I added white gelatos and orange gelatos for more color.  These can also be blended with water or a baby wipe.

Using Dyan Reaveley's small diamond stencil and some gesso I added a little more interest.  Not completely satisfied I used a circle stencil from the local office supply store to apply some more gesso in the upper left corner.  After the gesso was dry I laid the same stencil back over the white dots, moved it off center just a little and sprayed the Cottage Ivy Fireworks!, blotted with a paper towel roll, dried with a heat gun.  When this was dry and the stencil had been cleaned, I laid the stencil on the green dots and sprayed the area again but with the Willow Walnut Ink spray.  I carefully removed the stencil and blotted it with the paper towel roll, then dried it even more with my heat gun.  Bringing out the Memento inks again I applied more Peanut Brittle and Morocco inks to the edges and blended them with a dauber applicator.

For more texture and depth I made small lines on the page with an old credit card.  Using StazOn Cotton White and Ivory Black Opaque Inkers I dipped my credit card edge in each and made small marks on the paper.  With an old lid dipped in Golden Gold Interference paint I added circles for a metallic pop.  At this point my page is pretty much layered and ready for the focal point.  My focal point is a piece of clip art from DeviantScrap.com made by itKuPiLLi imagenarium.  She was giving this away as a freebie on the site last month and her work is incredible!  There is a quote included that says "Love of beauty is tasted.  The creation of beauty is art." by Ralph Waldo Emerson.  I tore this out, edged it with some of the Walnut Ink spray on an applicator and set it aside.  After cutting out the lady I used Matte Medium to adhere the image
to the page.


 



I had some white self adhesive pearls by Queen & Co in my stash so I applied those to her hat band and a stray one to her necklace.  I felt like she needed a little more detail on the hat so I stamped a flower on white card stock with clear embossing ink three times, applied Detail White embossing powder and melted it with my heat gun.  When this had cooled completely I sprayed the Lilac Walnut Ink spray on the flower images and wiped the excess off with a paper towel.  I applied a tiny bit of Goosebumps in the center of each flower and set it aside to dry before trimming it out.  Then I glued the flower down with a piece of black grosgrain ribbon underneath.

The sheen on her hat is some leftover Gold Interference paint that I had on my craft mat.  I decided that Spring time always makes me think of traveling to far off places so I stamped some faux postage in Black StazOn ink randomly around her image and a few stamped cancellation marks for good measure.  To get more depth and definition around the image I applied some Black Gelato and blended it down with my finger and a damp paper towel.  When I want to journal but have absolutely nothing to say, at this point you're thinking "after this long winded blog posting how could she think she has nothing to say?", that's when I use a quote from someone else.  Happily for me this quote was provided in the clip art.  I wrote the words of this quote that I glued to her shoulder all around the image with a Faber-Castell Pitt artist pen in White 101.  A little distressing around the edge of the piece with VersaFine Olympia Green and an Ink Blushers applicator and Voila!  My art journal page is completed.

I apologize for the length of this post but you can't fake the layers on an art journal page.  Just remember to dry everything between each layer and enjoy yourself.  You could easily turn this into a calendar page by using the small transparent calendars and applying that to her shoulder instead of the quote.  The beauty of journaling pages is that it is all about YOU and what YOU like on your page.  There is no right or wrong.  You might have noticed how similar this page is to one that I did last week.  It just shows you how the central image can be the same but the colors and theme are completely different.   So if you have an image that you love to use repeatedly, feel free, just mix it up a little.  Thank you so much for stopping by my blog today, I really appreciate your visits.  If you have time to leave a comment please do, I love to hear from you!  Here is a list of all the products I used on this project.

The cards measure 4" by 6" and are cut from 140# watercolor paper.  I coat each card with a small amount of gesso and allow it to dry before spraying water on the surface.  The light spritz of water is quickly followed with a generous spray of Tuskineko's Walnut Ink Spray.  For one card I chose Willow, the second one was sprayed with a combination of Lilac, Cornfllower and Willow Walnut Ink Sprays and a third was sprayed with  Cornflower Walnut Ink spray.  After I spray the colored Walnut Ink I allow the ink to run all over the surface, spraying a little more water if necessary, blotting here and there with a paper towel and then thoroughly drying it with a heat gun.  As a final touch I spray a little bit of Tsukineko Sheer Shimmer Spritz in Frost or Sparkle.  I allow this to move around the card by lifting and turning it, then a quick dry with the heat gun.  Now I have a muted color that feels a little shabby but still chic at the same time.  After I achieve what I feel is an understated, elegant background color then I add my clip art, DeviantScrap.com has a wonderful selection, and some rubber stamping.  StazOn is a perfect permanent ink for this and comes in a variety of colors.  I turn to my "stash" to see what other embellishments/scraps I can use.  Each card has the edges distressed with coordinating StazOn inks.  I love the intense colors that StazOn provides.  I have found that StazOn ink is not just for stamping, it can be blended using Imagine Crafts Ink Blushers.  The colors are gorgeous!

Art Journal Page Creative Process

Several people have asked what my creative process is when I'm coming up with ideas for projects.  I guess in my case it depends on what the project is for and if I have restrictions as to the products that can be used.  Usually when I  am designing a Calendar Art Journal page for a class it takes me several days to come up with something I really like.  My process starts out on a post card size (4" by 6") piece of watercolor paper coated lightly with gesso.  When that is dry I start playing until I come up with a page that works for me.  Right now I'm working on my June Calendar two page spread that eventually I will do in the Dyan Reaveley journal for the store, Ink About It, and later teach to a group of very talented ladies.  By the time I'm done I have executed it three times.  Once in my "junk" journal, once in my real journal and once in the store's journal.  Whew! 

Here is the first post card design I came up with using StazOn inks and my new Stampotique girl stamp.  I'm trying to get a feel for the colors and images I want to use.

A second design soon followed.

I liked the background on this second one so much I did the first two page "sample" in a journal.

I tried the little Stampotique girl but she just didn't seem to fit it so I was looking around for something else to go on the page.  Then I remembered.....guess who just got some of Dina Wakley's new silhouettes made by TCW?  The stencil is called "Mini Casey and Penelope", it is so 60's.  So I thought I'd give them a whirl.
I actually made two other calendar pages that I'll share with you another time.  They have a very vintage 1920's feel to them.  The background that I finally chose will be changed and tweaked until the days of the week and the month fit into the whole thing.  The banners are made out of gesso scraped through an old stencil.  The circles are made with a stencil from Dyan Reaveley.

Moustache Wall Hanging

I love the current crafting trend with all the moustaches, don't you?  They make me smile every time I see them.  I had some bits and pieces of things left over from other projects so I thought I'd combine them to make a cute wall hanging.

It starts out with my Mona Lisa stamp by Stampers Anonymous that I have had forever.  I stamped Mona on a piece of white scrap paper using StazOn Royal Purple ink, dipped her in embossing powder and melted the powder with my heat gun.

I applied some Tsukineko Kaleidacolor "Vineyard 025" ink on a brayer and rolled it across a scrap piece of watercolor paper.  I sprayed a little water on it to activate the inks and blended them together.  I dried the paper with my heat gun and then started stamping on it to prepare a background. 

The background includes some script stamping using the StazOn Royal Purple ink and a couple of smears of Golden brand Interference Gold.  I cut a piece of the watercolor paper that measured 6" by 5" for this project. You can use the Memento inks that match the Vineyard Kaleidacolor pad for the layers of stamping in the background.  I used Lulu Lavender, Sweet Plum, Gray Flannel, Rich Cocoa, and Bamboo Leaves inks.   I stamped a Dina Wakley heart on a separate piece of scrap paper using StazOn Royal Purple ink, trimmed it out and then glued it to the lower right corner with Matte Medium .    I trimmed out Mona and glued her to the upper left corner with some Matte Medium.

Then using Faber Castell black gelatos I outlined the heart and blended it with my finger.  I used a star stencil to apply gesso to the surface of the panel to give it more texture.  Now for the fun part!  I found these adorable tiny moustaches made by Soft Spoken and put a few on the piece.  In my stash there was a leftover piece of cork that I cut to 5" by 1 1/2" and distressed the edges with StazOn Royal Purple ink.  Then I applied some Faber Castell purple metallic gelatos on top of that with my fingers.  I punched holes on either side of cork and ran a piece of neutral colored ribbon through the holes and knotted both sides.  For the base of the project I used a scrap piece of black card stock that measured 5" by 8".  The bottom of the black card stock was punched with Martha Stewart's scalloped edge punch.  I glued the cork piece to the top of the black card stock panel and the watercolor panel beneath that.  Since Mona lives in Paris I thought it deserved a mention with my Stamp Camp "Paris" stamp.  I used the StazOn Royal Purple ink for that.  I applied a few black and white lines of acrylic paint to the panel with an old credit card for the finishing touches.

The Blizzard of '13 has passed!

Wow!  What a storm.  We woke up to about 2 feet of snow this morning.  It started snowing yesterday at 10am and just now stopped.  A little over 24 hours of snow, we don't see that very often.  Thank goodness.  The dad across the street has already built an igloo for his kids, a kid's dream come true.  Here are a few pics of what it looks like here right now.

Time to bring out the heavy equipment and clear the driveway.  Definitely not a time to shovel snow!

Then the doorbell rang and look who was here!

We were blessed not to lose power this time.  My heart goes out to the hundreds of thousands here in New England that not only lost power but actually had to evacuate due to high tides.  Hopefully life will get back to normal soon.

On a lighter note I thought you might like to see a different side of the "Tomato Vine" colors.  If you use the Kaleidacolor ink pad you get a look that is more like the colors of a tomato, whereas if you use the colors that make up the pad separately you can get a completely different look.  I used a Brushstix tool to pick up the color and transfer it to the image.  Any little spots that weren't exactly what I wanted were enhanced with the matching Memento Markers.  I used the pads and the pens to distress the edges also.  Here is a quick card that shows you what I mean.

Home at last!

I finally got home from Calif.  Wow, what a long trip.  I went out for winter CHA and then stayed on to take care of my 86 year old mother who had a "procedure".  She is quite well, thank you, and was running around with her walker by the time I left.  I knew it was time to leave when I kept following her around telling her to slow down, sit down and put her feet up and she was having none of it.  A nurse came by on Sunday afternoon and pronounced her just fine.  Now a little about CHA.

Where to begin.  I did a demo/make & take for ImagineCrafts (aka:Memento/Tsukineko) on Friday evening.  My daughter came to assist me.  Oh. My. Goodness!  What a time we had.  This was my first rodeo so I thought I'd have maybe 4 people or so at a time.  I walked up front to leave my daughter's name at the door and saw a line that wrapped around the corner and down the hall.  I said "are all the people lined up to come in here?"  The door monitor said "yes".  WooHoo!  Instead of 4 people at a time we were teaching 8 people at a time.  Our project was a miniature art journaling page/postcard.  It measures 4" by 6" and is done on 140 lb. watercolor paper.  Just at our table we taught over 100 people, mostly retail  store owners, how to do this and only had 5 cards left by 9:00 when the event closed.  Whew!  Here are the photos of the room and a few of the exhibitors who were demo-ing projects BEFORE everyone came in.  There are no AFTER photos but believe me it did not look the same at any of the booths. :-)  We just kept scooping all the paper towels and baby wipes onto the floor behind the tables to make room for the next person.  Holly and I were busy for 3 hours straight.  I had the time of my life!

Imagine Crafts provided this calendar so people could put each project on a page as they moved around the room and completed each one.  I thought that was a really great idea.  I was "Miss November".   (lol)

The following days spent at CHA were surreal.  Imagine walking around and seeing all the crafters you follow on-line just sitting there or walking around.  One minute we'd spot the Gentleman Crafter strolling with Shelly Hickox, the next minute Dyan Reaveley would go flying by (wearing a moustache) closely followed by Wendy Vecchi.  Tim Holtz and Mario would be sitting close by visiting with anyone who stopped by to say hello.  So many of these crafting teachers were doing demos at different booths for hours.  If you wanted to you could just sit or stand there and be taught for a couple of hours by people like Dina Wakley or Claudine Hellmuth.  And the projects!  All the latest and greatest products were on display being demoed by each company.  The projects and decorations in the over 2000 booths were incredible.  I took a few photos but I was so overwhelmed by the whole thing my photos do not do the experience justice.  Here are a few photos I had the presence of mind to take.  Tomorrow I will share the rest of the photos.

New Masterboard using Tsukineko's FIREWORKS

I can't stop making Masterboards lately.  As I continue to try different products and colors I am amazed at how different each one can be.  For this masterboard I used watercolor paper that had first been coated with a very thin layer of gesso.  After allowing the gesso to thoroughly dry I sprayed Tsukineko's Goosebumps, think liquid plastic, through a circle stencil.  It takes a little while for the goosebumps to dry and then I started spraying the Fireworks glimmer mist, also by Tsukineko, over it.  I just bought a package of three containing the colors Tangelo, Lady Bug, and Dandelion so I kept layering one color after the other, blotting with paper towels along the way, until I was satisfied.  A quick dry with a heat gun and then I began stamping.  The stamped images are just little stars by Rubber Stampede and a diamond design by Paper Inspirations.  I used Memento's Pistachio ink to stamp these and then I heat embossed them with clear embossing powder.  Now it was time to bring out the lids.  I have a collection of old lids that I have recycled into stamps.  I dipped the lids in red, turquoise and white acrylic paints, one color at a time, and stamped them randomly all over the page.  Everyone seems to have old gift cards/credit cards/hotel room keys, etc. that can also be used to dip in acrylic paint and make straight lines on the paper.  This also adds some depth and interest to your pages.  I used black and white acrylic paint for the lines.  Now the paper can be photocopied and used over and over.  This is what the entire sheet looked like.

You can add drops of water and blot them for a ghosting effect when it is completed, if you like.  This next photo shows a card made with the paper.

Masterboards are so fun to make!  I hope this will encourage you to make your own, just the color you want it to be.  If you haven't tried Fireworks sprays you are in for a treat, great colors with a little bit of shimmer.  Have a great weekend.  Talk to you soon.

Masterboard using Memento Inks

I love creating Masterboards.  When I make a masterboard I can use whatever inks, stamps, etc. that I want just randomly on a large piece of paper.  After it is finished to my satisfaction I can then either photocopy it on heavy cardstock or I can just cut up the masterboard and use it as background paper for cards or other projects.

As I have mentioned before I have fallen in love with the colors of Memento inks.  For this masterboard I used Summer Sky, Pistachio, Espresso Truffle, London Fog, Pear Tart and Morocco.  I have a large piece of watercolor paper coated in gesso to begin.  After the gesso is completely dry, I apply the inks direct to paper and blend them with a foam blending tool.  Every once in a while if the color looks too heavy I just lightly mist it with water and continue to lift the paper, let the ink run a little and then blend it again.  After I have the colors just where I like them I stamped some of Dyan Reaveley's Basic Background stamps, using the same colors of ink.  I also like to make some lines on the paper using black,white and other colors of acrylic paints.  I use the same colors to stamp circles randomly on the paper.  This is the end result.

Sometimes I cut the watercolor masterboard paper to fit the front of a blank 5" by 7" card.  After cutting the paper I can stamp images on it or phrases.  In this case the girl image is by Dina Wakley, it's called Lonely Girl.  The phrase is by Dyan Reavely.  The ink used is Memento's Peanut Brittle.  I placed a tiny scrap of foil on her eyes.

On this second card I used the photocopy made on heavy cardstock of the masterboard.  The stamped images are all Dyan Reaveley's but the inks are Memento's pens.  The pens are really lovely colors so they blend well with what I've already done using their ink pads.

I really love the palette of colors offered by Memento.  Using them this way gives your homemade paper or Masterboard an effect very similar to watercolors.  It is nice to be able to create your very own one of a kind background paper.

Art Journal Cafe Challenge

The ladies at Art Journal Cafe have a wonderful color challenge going on this week.  This is the suggested color palette:

The colors are to be used any way you like on a journaling page.

First I used gesso to unify the background and give the paper some tooth.  After that I applied acrylic paints that fit into the palette.  I used a lot of inks and some modeling paste along with stencils, stamps, etc.  The clip art is from Hidden Vintage Studio at DeviantScrap.com.  A quick spritz of Dyan Reaveley's red spray ink, blotted with a kitchen roll and blended with a baby wipe.  It looks very urban IRL.

2013 Art Journal Calendar Pages

I'm preparing for my new classes at Ink About It my LSS in Westford, MA.  I'll be teaching Calendar Pages using Dyan's art journal.  There will be one class a month with two calendar pages to complete.  Here is my first installment for Jan/Feb 2013. 

I wanted to have an icy blue effect on this page with a little twinkle of snowflakes in the background.
For February I wanted more of an orange sherbert kind of an effect.

I hope people find them interesting enough to sign up for the classes.  I had a lot of fun developing the pages.

Have you tried art journaling yet?  Have you tried making your own calendars?    There are some great tutorials on YouTube that can inspire you and help you to overcome that fear of a blank page staring back at you.  Throw some gesso on it first and let it dry.  Now it's not blank any more.  Just let your imagination soar and have some fun with it.  You don't have to share your pages with anyone unless you want to.  Become fearless and try something new this week.  Go for it.

Blue skies after Hurricane Sandy

We woke up to blue skies this morning after torrential rains and winds all day yesterday into the night.  I do believe every leaf in the neighborhood is on our lawn but that's OK.  The only tree branches on the ground were the ones that broke in the storm last year right around this time.  Thanks to all for their phone calls, emails and general good wishes and prayers.  Our hearts go out to those who did not fair as well!
The blue skies were an inspiration to me and I decided to put it to paper in my DR Journal with a bit of journaling marking the storm.  Since there is a challenge at Simon Says to just add pearl I decided to deck my lady, let's call her Sandy, out with a pearl necklace so she is dressed for the party over there.  There were a few sprays of Mementos Bahama Blue Fireworks involved to add a glimmer to the pages.
